SFE membership requirements

SFE Student - Membership Requirements

The Student class of membership is open to student members of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers or Royal Institute of British Architects and those studying a course in façade engineering recognised by the Society. 

 

SFE Affiliate - Membership Requirements

The Affiliate class of membership is open to anyone who has an interest in façade engineering. There is no requirement for applicants to demonstrate knowledge or experience of façade engineering.

This class of membership does not enable the member to demonstrate any competences in the field. However, affiliates have all the other benefits of membership.

 

SFE Associate - Membership Requirements

This is the entry class for all new members of the Society with experience and/or qualifications who intend to to transfer to membership.

Associates will normally be required to satisfy one of the following criteria:

  1. Have had relevant experience in facade engineering over a period of at least five years and has attained a position demonstrating a level of proven competence in facade engineering to an appropriate standard.
  2. Have undertaken a full or part time course at Diploma level in facade engineering recognised by the Society, and have a minimum of three years' relevant experience in facade engineering.
  3. Hold membership at a professional grade of CIBSE, IStructE or RIBA and have a minimum of three years' relevant experience in other aspects of facade engineering.

Applicants who have different but equivalent experience, education, training and qualifications, will be considered.

Applicants should also show evidence of a commitment to continuing professional development.

SFE Member - Membership Requirements

The class of Member is open to those who have achieved the required educational base and subsequent development to enable them to act as exponents of today´s technology, and both apply and manage its application within the broad field of facade engineering.

Members of the Society can use the designatory letters MSFE.  Candidates will normally be required to satisfy one of the following criteria:

  1. Have relevant facade engineering experience over a minimum period of seven years and have successfully completed a technical report covering a façade engineering project or topic.
  2. Have undertaken a full or part time course at MSc level in facade engineering recognised by the Society, and have a minimum of five years relevant experience in facade engineering.
  3. Hold membership at a professional grade of CIBSE, IStructE or RIBA and have a minimum of seven years relevant experience in other aspects of facade engineering.

Applicants who have different but equivalent experience, education, training and qualifications, will be considered.

Applicants should also show evidence of a commitment to continuing professional development.

 

SFE Fellow - Membership Requirements

Fellow is the highest class of membership of the Society and may be awarded if you are, or have been, engaged in a position of responsibility in the design, construction or investigation of significant façade projects, or undertaken research at equivalent level. Fellows of the Society will contribute to the development of knowledge and practice in the field of façade engineering.

Fellows of the Society can use the designatory letters FSFE.  Candidates will normally be required to satisfy all of the following criteria:

  1. Meet the requirements for the Member class.
  2. Have held a responsible position in facade engineering or a related field for not less than ten years with at least five years in appointment(s) in which they have personal responsibility for the design, execution or promotion of important façade engineering works or equivalent responsibility in research or teaching.
  3. Show evidence of a commitment to continuing professional development.
  4. Have been in membership of SFE at Member grade for a period of at least two years.

In rare circumstances the Membership Committee may consider transfer of exceptional candidates with less than two years in Member grade. This will require recommendation by at least two existing Fellows of the Society and be supplemented by an exemplary technical report prepared by the candidate and globally recognised experience.
